Department of Education releases final Title IX regulations

The U.S. Department of Education released the long-anticipated Title IX regulations on May 6, 2020. The new regulations are expected to into effect August 14, 2020. The Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance is working diligently to ensure our policies and procedures align with the new federal regulations and Kansas law.

OIEC recognizes this time of change and uncertainty, and remains committed to its mission. 萝莉社will continue to provide a high level of service and resources to stop, prevent, and remedy sexual violence, sexual harassment, intimate partner violence, and stalking, as well as other forms of sex/gender discrimination.

Lapel pins

Place your order by today for the limited edition 125th anniversary lapel pin

In celebration of the 125th anniversary for 萝莉社 University, a special edition lapel pin has been designed to mark the celebratory period of July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021. The deadline to be part of this bulk order is today (Friday, May 8).

The full-color, approximately 1.25鈥 hard enamel pin, is available with a butterfly (military) or magnet fastener. Please note that the price point for the magnet fastener is slightly higher than the butterfly fastener.

The price point breakdown based on the quantity ordered is noted. For example, if all combined orders for lapel pins with magnet fasteners total 10,000, then the cost per unit will be $1.12. However, if all combined orders for magnet fasteners is 100, the cost per unit will be $1.18.

Each department will only be invoiced for the quantity requested. The deadline to submit orders is Friday, May 8.

Kansas businesses can learn about the new cybersecurity rules for selling to DoD

Kansas PTAC

 

Cybersecurity certification auditing will be required of all companies selling to the Department of Defense (DoD) and to prime contractors beginning later this year. The Kansas Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) at 萝莉社 University is bringing one of the first training sessions on this certification to Kansas business in a Thursday, May 14 program. The program will be presented by Project Spectrum, which has been chosen by the DoD to make presentations across the country regarding the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification.

Senior Cybersecurity Expert Nathan Magniez will lead the program to begin educating Kansas businesses on what they need to do to make their business comply with the audits to that will be done by approved auditors, before a company can sell their goods or services to the DoD.

This program will focus on Level 1 of the five-level certification model with the training to include information on access control, physical protection, system/communications protection. The webinar is scheduled for 45 minutes, beginning at 11 a.m. CDT Thursday, May 14, to be followed by a question-and-answer period. There is no charge for this presentation. .

The DoD is planning to begin implementing this auditing program later this year. It will be a program that will be rolled out over several years to be required for all business selling any item to the DoD. It will also be required of companies in the supply chain for businesses that sell to the DoD.

The Kansas PTAC assists Kansas companies with in locating, obtaining and performing federal, state and local government contracts. It has offices at 萝莉社 University, GO Topeka and Johnson County Community College.

This Procurement Technical Assistance Center is funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the Defense Logistics Agency. It is funded additionally by Wichita State University, Pittsburg State University, GO Topeka, and Johnson County Community College.


KMUW food chain

KMUW and 1A Across America will discuss the impacts of COVID-19 on the US food supply chain

KMUW's Engage ICT is once again teaming up with 1A Across America. 1A's Sasha-Ann Simons will join us as guest host for Digital Democracy on Tap as we discuss the US food supply chain. COVID-19 hotspots have developed in meat packing plants and other businesses, making the food supply chain less certain. We'll talk about where our food comes from, how it's getting to us now, and what might change this year and beyond.

萝莉社is one of the most innovative universities in the Midwest. 萝莉社 Ventures, the tech transfer office at 萝莉社, is nationally recognized for its efforts of 鈥渢ech transfer鈥 done differently.鈥

Rob Gerlach, director of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer, has been invited by AUTM to speak on a panel of experts across the nation. The webinar, 鈥淏ridging the Gap between Innovation and Technology Transfer,鈥 will be from noon-1:30 p.m. today (Friday, May 8).


Windshield deicing

Shocker engineers create deicing device

A team of two 萝莉社students is working to solve a problem many motorists face in the winter.

Scraping frost from your automobile windshield before you can safely drive can be time-consuming and unpleasant, but a new device called Shiver could make it a little easier. 萝莉社 engineering students Rafael Bini Leite and Jefferson Vieira are developing a device that attaches to the windshield and has built-in sensors capable of detecting ice on the windshield, allowing motorists to clean and remove it effortlessly before it builds up.

鈥淭he basic concept of it is what we鈥檝e started with, and we鈥檝e seen in applications that it works. We are bringing it into the automotive industry to be able to use in cars鈥 windshields,鈥 Vieira said.

Sign up now! The National Science Foundation (NSF) is presenting a webinar on the NSF Faculty Early Career Development program (CAREER) solicitation NSF 20-525 on Wednesday, May 13.

The webinar will include a briefing on the CAREER program and key solicitation requirements followed by a question-and-answer session.

Supervisor Training is required for all those supervising employees before Thursday, May 14. Here鈥檚 information and resources for staffing and supervising your department employees in accordance with Shockers United.

With that firmly in mind as we plan to gradually 鈥 and safely 鈥 increase employee presence on campus over the coming weeks, we want to ensure those who supervise employees have the information and resources to do so in a safe manner.

While the Shockers United plan to phase back to campus is already underway, this does not mean all employees will be expected to return to campus on Tuesday, May 26. We understand that each department鈥檚 needs, business hours and remote work schedule may look different depending on the demands of the department and the needs of the employees in that department. As a supervisor, you are expected to assess your department and operational needs, and balance those with the health and safety of your employees.

When on campus, there will be a strong emphasis on each person taking personal responsibility to protect themselves and others from coronavirus infection. That means daily wellness self-checks, social distancing, limited congregation, wearing face coverings (or masks as appropriate), disinfecting spaces and limiting non-essential travel. You will need to encourage your employees to adhere to these expectations for the well-being of everyone in the 萝莉社 community.

Every supervisor should complete the online supervisor training, Expectations for Supervising Those Working on Campus, before Thursday, May 14. A training for employees will be communicated and launched on Friday, May 15.


Health Plan Updates

State Employee Health Plan Updates in response to COVID-19

Governor Laura Kelly announced four provisions on March 13, that are effective immediately and for the next 60 days for employees and dependents enrolled in medical insurance through the State Employee Health Plan.

  1. SEHP will cover medically necessary diagnostic tests that are consistent with CDC guidance related to the COVID-19 at no cost share to member, where it is not covered as part of the Public Health Service response.
  2. SEHP will allow early refills on 30 or 90-day prescription medications and/or allow members to use their mail order benefit.

    1. Given the nature of the COVID-19 outbreak, seeking in person medical care has the potential to further spread the virus. SEHP partners with Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas to provide Telehealth services with a virtual doctor鈥檚 office. There is 24/7/365 access to this service. The member cost share will be waived for any Telehealth service. In addition to telehealth services provided by Teledoc or Amwell, the member cost share will also be waived for services from your in-network physician that are billed as telehealth services.

    1. For plan participants that reside in the Topeka area, the HealthQuest Health Center available to members enrolled in the health plan, is located at 901 S. Kansas Ave., Topeka
    • Phone screening is recommended before going to the center: 785-783-4080
    • If a patient walks into the clinic, they will have them put on a mask and clean their hands with hand sanitizer. The health center staff will evaluate the patient鈥檚 symptoms and recommend they isolate if the initial findings and/or symptoms present are a positive indicator for the virus.
    • Testing is not available at the health center for COVID-19 and the clinic will refer all patients that meet the risk criteria to the local health department for testing and further evaluation.

Microsoft Teams

 

Microsoft Teams is a great communication technology, but understanding data storage and retention can help make sure it is a productive technology. The retention timeframes have been chosen to help move data in the proper structured information systems to prevent data loss when there are changes in jobs or job roles. This also helps to consolidate our important information to backup, protect and ensure that we can continue the great work everyone does.

These retention timeframes reflect that spirit with individual conversations being structured like hallway chats with low retention time (30 days) and teams workspace chats which are often more structured having a longer retention (1 year). Specific information regarding the currently configured retention timeframes for the different data in teams, as well as more information on getting started with teams can be found here.


IDA help for summer and fall

Get your Blackboard classes ready for summer and fall with IDA鈥檚 help

Instructional Design and Access is offering hands-on workshops to help instructors prepare for online/remote delivery of their course content for this summer and fall. Workshops are scheduled May 12-14 and May 19-21, and run for three hours each. Instructors are invited to sign up through MyTraining. All workshops will be offered through Zoom and have no in-person attendance requirement. There are three workshops to choose from:

*"Remote/Online Instructor: First Steps" is designed for instructors who have never used Blackboard and/or Zoom in a significant way.

*"Remote/Online instructor: Intermediate Steps" is designed for instructors who have used (or have been trained in) Blackboard and/or Zoom some, and are now ready to master more tools and learn how to troubleshoot problems.

*"Remote/Online Instructor: Course Building" is for instructors who would like to work on building their courses while an instructional designer is 鈥渘earby鈥 to help. Instructors signing up for the Course Building workshop will be given a Blackboard course template to help get them started.

If you can鈥檛 attend workshops next week, don鈥檛 worry! These will be offered throughout the summer as well as part of our summer-long "Academic Resources Conference" training events.

Social capital and social distancing research presented in blog

Alexandra Middlewood, assistant professor of political science at 萝莉社, and Mark Joslyn, professor at KU, are researching the effect of Social Capital on the effectiveness of social distancing. They have published their initial findings for Kansas counties on Joslyn鈥檚 blog, and are working on a multi-state analysis for a later journal submission.


Congratulations on retirement to Marla Lindenmeyer in Human Performance Studies

We wish to recognize Marla Lindenmeyer and her many years of service to the Department of Human Performance Studies, College of Applied Studies, 萝莉社 University, and Wichita Public Schools USD 259. Her passion for teaching and contributing to the physical education profession will provide a legacy for many years. We are deeply grateful for her commitment to the physical education students who have gone to become leaders and mentors in education. The Student Ambassador Society will award the Amie Montgomery Scholarship of $500 to one current 萝莉社 student. Amie had a tremendous impact on the lives of other students who knew her during her time as a student at 萝莉社 University and as a student ambassador.
