SMART Lab
The SMART Lab from the Department of Sport Management provides research, analytics, and data collection for Sport Management, Recreation, and Tourism organizations. Headed by Dr. Wonyoung Kim, the SMART Lab is committed to providing research value to practitioners and applied learning for students.
Dr. Kim provides a learning "lab" where students learn to engage with the sport-based research, such as business, performance, and/or web analytics, benefitting members of our sport management, recreation, and tourism communities.
The SMART Lab is located within the College of Applied Studies (CAS) and offers partnerships, applied learning experiences, holistic educational opportunities, networking, and both personal and professional experiences. The SMART Lab is committed to rigorous and impactful applied research projects, which is articulated in the SMART Lab's Purpose Statement.
Purpose Statement: Our purpose is to support practitioners by gathering, analyzing, visualizing, and disseminating sport, recreation, and tourism-related research while providing students an opportunity to learn and develop professionally.
The SMART Lab believe that an organization has to be grounded in the goals and objectives that impact all decisions. The goals and outcomes of the SMART Lab include the following:
- Serve as a sport, recreation, and tourism organization research resource in order to support our local and regional practitioners.
- Provide applied learning experiences for students interested in sport, recreation, or tourism-related research projects.
- Provide local and regional sport, recreation, and tourism organizations with access to industry best-practices for research collection, analysis, visualization, and dissemination techniques.

Dr. Wonyoung Kim is an Associate Professor and Executive Director of SMART Lab in the Department of Sport Management at 蹤獲扦 University. His research interests include investigating consumer behavior and decision-making process in sport, tourism, and related contexts. Areas of teaching include business analytics in sport, sport marketing, sport finance, sport event management, and study abroad in sport and entertainment courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Dr. Kim also supervises both undergraduate and graduate internship students.
Dr. Kim has considerable expertise in examining consumer behavior in sport and tourism contexts. Hes been actively involving in consulting projects including the Wichita Open, Stump Eyewear, Derby Recreation Commission, Mulvane Recreation Commission, and Mokpo National University in South Korea. He has worked to develop and sustain effective partnerships with local, national, and international partners supporting students and disseminating the knowledge of sport management. He serves the Department of Sport Management at 蹤獲扦 since 2012 and holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Administration and Teaching (Cognate: Sport Management) from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Like any great organization, an advisory board is key to external accountability. And, there are a number of Board Members devoting both their time and talent to the SMART Lab. These members include:
The SMART Lab provides formalized internship and applied learning experiences for students. The SMART Lab internship is a paid position that supports the development, growth, and maintenance of the SMART Labs activities, duties, and initiatives. Duties would include:
- Support, engage, and manage SMART Labs social media promotional strategies
- Engaging and coordinating SMART Lab applied research projects in partnership with SMART Lab director and/or other student participants.
- Manage SMART Lab databases
- Produce regular research incubator briefs.
- Other duties as assigned.
Logistics of the internship include the following:
- Paid position: intern is paid through semesterly stipends as available.
- Work expectations: Varies based upon projects, deadlines, and research initiatives.
- Eligibility Requirements: student must be enrolled or using this internship as part of an applied learning experience for academic credit.
- Preferred: Graduate student majoring in Sport Management; would consider advanced undergraduate student that majors/minors in Sport management, Organizational Leadership and Learning, or other related field.
