Recognizing that financial aid alone cannot increase retention and graduation in STEM, the program provides awards to Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) to fund scholarships and to adapt, implement, and study effective evidence-based curricular and co-curricular activities that support recruitment, retention, transfer (if appropriate), student success, academic/career pathways, and graduation in STEM.

Purpose: This ARPA Good Jobs Challenge NOFO is designed to help get Americans back to work by developing and strengthening regional systems to develop and execute sectoral partnerships that will lead to well-paying jobs. The goal of regional workforce training systems is to create and implement effective employer-driven training programs that will connect the existing and emerging skills needs of employers with workers and will help workers find and keep quality jobs and advance along their chosen career path. Regional workforce training systems and sectoral partnerships funded under this NOFO should connect employers in an industry with key regional stakeholders, including state and local governmental entities, economic development organizations, workforce development boards, employer-facing organizations, education and training providers, communitybased organizations (CBOs), worker-serving organizations (WSOs), and/or labor unions. The system or partnership should be led by a System Lead Entity or Backbone Organization, respectively, serving as an intermediary that has convening power in the region and the capacity to coordinate all necessary stakeholders. EDA also encourages systems and partnerships to address populations with labor market barriers such as persons with disabilities, at-risk youth, individuals in recovery, individuals with past criminal records including justiceimpacted and reentry participants, and veterans.

Awardees are expected to resume their teaching in the fall for the next academic year. A faculty member may receive only one of the following in a fiscal year: an ARCS, a University Research/Creative Projects Award (URCA), or a Multidisciplinary Research Project Award (MURPA). Those who accept any summer appointment from their college (for the summer grant period) are ineligible.

Purpose: Given the scientific literature documenting health inequities among immigrant populations, this announcement calls for multidisciplinary/multilevel research focusing on the design and implementation of effective interventions that will address immigrant-specific factors to reduce health disparities, particularly among migrant workers, recent and 1st generation immigrants.  The intervention research under this FOA should be aimed at improving the health outcome among immigrant groups by targeting the complex causes or consequences of health disparities. Multi-level interventions that include a combination of individual, group (such as peers, family members, etc.), and/or community-level intervention components have been shown to be effective in improving health outcomes. Therefore, this FOA strongly encourages multi-level interventions (i.e., ranging from individuals to societies) in addressing immigrant health disparities. 

Amount: Application budgets are not limited but need to reflect the actual needs of the proposed project.

Purpose: The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support research that will advance the measurement and methodology of complex constructs relevant to minority health and health disparities.  To identify, explain, and address health disparities and health inequities, measures that accurately capture these disparities and methods for collection and analysis of those measures are necessary. Much of the focus to date on measures and methods for health disparities has been on determining the presence and magnitude of disparities or validating and assessing individual-level social determinants of health. What is needed are measures that can better capture social disadvantage. For example, what is needed are measures and methods for constructs that reflect a complex interplay of cultural, social, and environmental factors that shape an individuals or populations lived experience and their impact on health behaviors and outcomes. In particular, methodological approaches are needed to best assess health determinants beyond the individual level, including those at the interpersonal, family, organizational, neighborhood, community, and societal levels (see ) as well as methods that integrate health determinants across levels. With the increasing recognition of the importance of incorporating a life course perspective into health disparities research, there is a corresponding need for measures and methods that assess cumulative risk and resilience over time for individuals and population groups. An additional area for measurement and methods development is related to intersectionality, specifically understanding the lived experience and health impacts of belonging to more than one socially disadvantaged or marginalized population. Across these areas of particular importance is understanding the scientific utility of using comprehensive, granular measures (e.g., assessing every dimension of a construct or every occurrence of a specific phenomenon) versus more global, holistic measures with respect to the usefulness of information they produce, the usability of the data, resources required to analyze them, respondent acceptability and burden, and population relevance. Methods of data collection that are accessible and suitable for populations that experience health disparities are needed as are methods for analysis of measures collected at multiple levels. 

Amount: Application budgets are limited to $500,000 direct costs annually, not including consortium F&A costs.

Purpose: The Understanding the Rules of Life: Predicting Phenotype "Big Idea" is based on developing a predictive understanding of how key properties of living systems emerge from interactions of factors such as genomes, phenotypes, and evolving environments. Ideally, the predictive capability of the Rules of Life explored by projects supported by the program will enable us to address some of the greatest challenges we currently face in understanding the living world.  This Understanding the Rules of Life: Emergent Networks (URoL:EN) solicitation is a cross-directorate program of NSF that aims to develop a predictive understanding of how key properties of living systems emerge from interactions of factors such as genomes, phenotypes, and environments and how emerging networks of organismal, natural, social, and/or  human-engineered systems respond to or influence evolving environments.  Successful projects of the URoL:EN program are expected to use convergent approaches that explore emergent network properties of living systems across various levels of organizational scale and, ultimately, to contribute to understanding the rules of life through new theories and reliable predictions about the impact of specific environmental changes on behaviors of complex living systems, or engineerable interventions and technologies based on a rule of life to address associated outcomes for societal benefit. Projects that advance all of the different fields of science represented in the project and that represent different NSF Directorates are strongly encouraged. 

Amount: The URoL:EN Program will support projects with a total budget of up to $3,000,000 and an award duration of up to 5 years.

EDAs Expert Panel Discussion about the Good Jobs Challenge: December 17, 2021

The EDAs American Rescue Plan $500 million aims to connect Americans with the training opportunities they need to develop in-demand skills that lead to good jobs and long-term careers. EDA is seeking applications that will build and strengthen industry-led partnerships with a focus on removing barriers to training, particularly for those workers hit hardest by the pandemic, including women and communities of color.  In advance of the Good Jobs Challenge program deadline, EDA continues to provide resources and technical assistance for applicants to enhance their proposals. The field of ImmunoEngineering combines the diverse and complex fields of engineering and immunology and is transforming patient treatment in cancer, autoimmunity, regeneration, and transplantation. There is a significant need for training of engineers in immunology and for training immunologists in quantitative engineering techniques. Moreover, there is need to bridge basic immunological discoveries with advances in clinical application. This course will review the fundamentals of the immune system and its components, engineering strategies to modulate the immune system, and clinical applications. The course is designed for graduate students and senior undergraduates, medical students, residents, and fellows in engineering, immunology, and related fields. Engineering and clinical faculty and members of industry will benefit from the course in fundamental immunology education and immunoEngineering advances.

Join the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Friday, January 7, 2022 from 2:30 p.m. 3:30 p.m. ET for a webinar on the revised solicitation, Understanding the Rules of Life: Emerging Networks (URoL:EN, NSF 22-532). Program Officers will provide an introduction of the revised cross-Directorate solicitation and representatives from the program will be available for questions. As part of the Understanding the Rules of Life: Predicting Phenotype, one of ten Big Ideas NSF-wide, this revised solicitation builds on previous URoL programs to help increase knowledge and the ability to predict an organisms observable characteristicsits phenotypefrom its genotype. Understanding the mechanisms at play in the interconnections between living organisms and their environments, across every biological scale, will provide vital insight into grand biological challenges, help advance biotechnology to spur the US bioeconomy, and aid in solving some of societys issues, including the growing impacts of infectious disease and climate change. Investigators from across the biological sciences are encouraged to submit proposals in concert with researchers in other disciplines, including the mathematical and physical sciences, geosciences, computer and information sciences, engineering, and behavioral and social sciences.

 


Office of Victims of Crime Training and Technical Assistance Center Webinar: Planning for Sustainability, Diversifying Funding and Writing Complex Grants: January 12 and January 19, 2022

Victim serving organizations often struggle with fluctuating funding sources and levels of support. The first session in this series will explore two critical domains of sustainability planningeffective resource and partnership developmentand will help participants apply strategies that build strong support for their programs, potentially leading to new funding opportunities. Participants will begin to create a diversified funding plan framework, which will include new approaches for expanding a potential donor/funder pool. The second session will explore the essential ingredients of complex grant applications: compelling statements of need, detailed budget justifications aligned with project goals and objectives, and quality outcome measures. Implementing these plans and using these tools will improve the odds of success in finding strategic and sustainable funding.
