Purpose: “The research and development and demonstration activities to be funded under this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will support the government-wide approach to the climate crisis by driving the innovation that can lead to the deployment of clean energy technologies, which are critical for climate protection. Specifically, this FOA will support the DOE decarbonization goals by advancing innovative solar hardware, software, and manufacturing processes across a broad range of technology readiness levels, from laboratory-scale to pilot-scale testing and prototype demonstration.  Technologies of interest include photovoltaics (PV), systems integration, and concentrating solar-thermal power (CSP) technologies, as well as those that connect solar with storage or electric vehicles and dual-use PV applications like agrivoltaics and vehicle-integrated PV. SETO encourages for-profit applicants to team with diverse institutions including academic institutions, non-profits, state and local governments, and Tribal governments.  The FOA also seeks projects that provide outreach, education, or technology development for software that delivers an automated permit review and approval process for rooftop solar PV with or without energy storage. Both for-profit and non-profit entities are eligible to apply under this topic.”

Purpose: “The Greenwall Foundation is requesting proposals for the Bridging Bioethics Research & Policymaking grant initiative, which supports the innovative and practical integration of bioethics into policy. This initiative does not fund bioethics research but, rather, supports bioethics researchers, policymakers, and others to take the next step and bridge the divide between research results and policymaking. Rapid developments in healthcare, science, and technology raise exciting possibilities to advance our health and well-being, but also raise complex ethical dilemmas. Purpose: “The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) is accepting applications for a cooperative agreement to measure the use of health information technology (IT) among office-based physicians. The purpose of this cooperative agreement is to measure U.S. office-based physicians' use of interoperable health IT, their experience using health IT, and the impact of health IT on the care they deliver. The cooperative agreement is intended to produce detailed data on interoperability and use of health IT by office-based physicians. These data will result in insights on the implementation and effects of federal health IT policies, allow for identification of disparities in the physicians adopting and using interoperable health IT in terms of the populations they serve or unintended consequences such as increased burden on clinicians resulting from the implementation of health IT, and will inform ONC's ongoing efforts to achieve better health enabled by data through coordination and regulation. The cooperative agreement recipient is encouraged to make the key findings of the cooperative agreement publicly available via their website; peer-reviewed publications in biomedical journals; presentations at conferences; webinars, or blog posts.”

Purpose: “The GTO GRID aims to quantify the role of geothermal power in an equitable, decarbonized grid. This work will address the challenge of grid stability through detailed studies on how clean, firm geothermal power can support and stabilize the grid as it incorporates higher shares of variable renewable energy sources. Innovative valuation metrics developed under this Funding Opportunity Announcement will provide a deeper understanding of geothermal energy's economic and reliability benefits, fostering informed decision making for future energy policies and investments, alongside research on supporting an equitable transition through geothermal deployment.”

Purpose: “The most competitive projects will demonstrate clear benefits to both monarch butterfly and additional at-risk native insect pollinator species (i.e., federally listed, candidate, or proposed native insect pollinator species). Special consideration will be given to projects benefiting rusty patched bumble bee, Franklin’s bumble bee, Karner blue butterfly, Dakota skipper, Poweshiek skipperling, and Mitchell’s satyr.  Grants will be awarded in two categories: Technical Assistance for Private Working Lands and Habitat Improvement.”

Purpose: “RSF will accept letters of inquiry (LOIs) under all of its core programs and special initiatives: Behavioral Science and Decision Making in Context; Future of Work; Immigration and Immigrant Integration; Promoting Educational Attainment and Economic Mobility among Racially, Ethnically, and Economically Diverse Groups after the 2023 Supreme Court Decision to Ban Race-Conscious Admissions at Colleges and Universities; Race, Ethnicity and Immigration; Social, Political, and Economic Inequality. Purpose: “The EPA is seeking additional applications from eligible public and private nonprofit entities to assist current or prospective EPA grant recipients more effectively address their grant progress and performance requirements of their EPA-funded grant agreements. Reporting requirements involve gathering data, administering reports, and addressing evidence-building metrics. Applicants also may place special emphasis on aiding EPA-funded recipients and subrecipients of Clean Water and Safe Drinking Water programs, as well as grant recipients representing small, underserved, and/or tribal communities that are applying for or receiving EPA grant funding, including but not limited to funding under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act.”

Purpose: “The AI for Climate and Nature Grand Challenge is a global $100 million initiative from the Bezos Earth Fund. The Grand Challenge is exploring new ideas for multiplying the impact of climate and nature efforts using modern AI. The first round of awards will focus on sustainable proteins, power grid optimization, and biodiversity conservation, in addition to embracing visionary wildcard solutions for climate and nature.”

Funding Agency: Research Society for the Prevention of Firearm-Related Harms and the National Collaborative on Gun Violence Research (NCGVR)

Application Deadline: Nominations due July 31, 2024

Purpose: “This new prize competition, sponsored by the Greenwald Foundation, will annually recognize one or two outstanding research papers on firearm violence and injury prevention. The authors of the winning paper(s) will share a $5000 prize. And the prize will also entail covering the travel and conference registration fee costs for the presenting author of each winning paper(s).  Winners will be announced at the annual meeting of the upcoming National Research Conference for the Prevention of Firearm-Related Harms, which will be held in Seattle, Washington in December 2024. One author of the awarded paper(s) will publicly receive the award and present their paper at the conference.”

Purpose: “NPB is pleased to announce its Request for Proposals for its 2024 food allergy grant program. Health equity is a primary lens through which projects will be evaluated, and early-career researchers are encouraged to apply.”

Purpose: “The CogNeuro Program seeks to fund proposals that can advance our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying human cognition and behavior. Title: Solicitation for Program Evaluation of the Federal Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program (SCIP) Grant

Application Deadline: August 15, 2024

Purpose: “The purpose of the SCIP evaluator is to assess the impact recipients of SCIP funds are having on the gun violence and violent crime rates in Kansas. The Program Evaluator will learn about the strategies and corresponding goals and objectives of the programs receiving SCIP grant funds for the SCIP Plan Priorities. The Program Evaluator will assess a minimum of 12 months of SCIP Subgrantee data, with a preference for 18 months of data. By generating more knowledge about strategies used to address reduction in gun violence and violent crime, communities that benefit from SCIP funding will be better equipped to align their work with practices that are known to be effective and promising. The SCIP evaluation component is designed to support a broad range of evaluation methods, including data review. We do not focus on a particular ​disease, but all our funded projects deal directly with children's health.  In the Early Career Award Program, the Fund is particularly interested in applicants that show great potential to impact that field of children's health through medical research. Both an applicant's aptitude and inclination toward research are considered. The quality of the mentor and the mentoring relationship are also considered to be important predictors of success.”

It will discuss future deployments to integrate the WOW Cart into a packaged greywater reuse system and for use at firefighting camps. Dave Carney, with Kentucky’s Healthcare Coalitions, will discuss the integration of the WOW Cart into their Emergency Response Plan and the use of the ‘Lily Pad Concept’ to pre-deploy multiple WOW Carts across the State.”

U.S. Department of Energy: Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO) Workshop on Transforming Industry: Strategies for Decarbonization Recording Available

IEDO Director Avi Shultz gave the opening remarks to the event. Then, in a discussion moderated by Andres Clarens from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, both Deputy Secretary of Energy David Turk and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Buildings and Industry Carolyn Snyder discussed the challenges and opportunities associated with a full industrial transformation. The event also included breakout discussions where industrial stakeholders provided direct feedback to help shape IEDO’s new Pathways for U.S. Industrial Transformations: Unlocking American Innovation vision study.

Learn to Use BeoShock for your Advanced Research Computing Needs

continues to host Beoshock, a High-Performance Computing Cluster (HPC). This HPC is available and free to faculty members, researchers and students engaged in course work or research activities. BeoShock runs the CentOS Linux operating system and features approximately 720 processor cores, two high memory compute nodes with 1.5 terabytes of memory, and four graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerators. BeoShock also has a variety of software tools that may be helpful in your research endeavors, such as Matlab, Mathematica, R, Python and many more.

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE): Technology Commercialization Fund Open Voucher Call

A new kind of opportunity created by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Technology Transitions and the Technology Commercialization Fund (TCF)—the TCF Open Voucher Call—will provide the public with opportunities to receive technical assistance from researchers at DOE National Laboratory facilities.  The $2.1 million TCF Open Voucher Call will help facilitate the commercialization of scientific discoveries by helping to identify pathways by which technological breakthroughs can make their way to market. Although a variety of technologies will be considered, applicants are encouraged to leverage the capabilities and initiatives of National Laboratories when developing their ideas so they can further develop their technology alongside the National Lab.

William T. Grant Foundation Early Career Reviewer Opportunity – Applications due by July 16, 2024

“The early-career reviewer program recruits early-career researchers to serve as peer-reviewers of grant proposals submitted to the William T. Grant Foundation for studies on improving the use of research evidence. Apart from reading and evaluating grant proposals in their areas of expertise, early-career reviewers receive personalized feedback from Foundation program officers and have access to additional reviews prepared by senior peer-reviewers. Altogether, this professional development program aims to build early-career researchers’ understanding of the proposal evaluation and peer-review process for use of research evidence grants to strengthen their own grant writing skills and ultimately advance their careers.”

National Science Board (NSB) Science and Engineering Indicators Report Available

“The State of U.S. Science and Engineering, details key findings from the nine thematic reports that make up Indicators, providing in-depth data and information on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education at all degree levels; the STEM workforce; public perceptions and awareness of science and technology; U.S. and international research and development performance; invention, knowledge transfer, and innovation; and U.S. competitiveness in high-technology industries. Indicators also includes an interactive, online tool that enables state comparisons on a variety of S&E indicators.”

National Science Foundation (NSF): Join a CASA-Bio Workshop and Help Plan a Future to Advance the U.S. Bioeconomy

“Catalyzing Across Sectors to Advance the Bioeconomy (CASA-Bio) was inspired by the Executive Order (EO) on Advancing Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Innovation for a Sustainable, Safe, and Secure American Bioeconomy. Released by the White House in September of 2022, the EO laid out a grand vision to advance biotechnology and biomanufacturing through foundational and use-inspired research and development in five thematic areas (EO Bioeconomy Themes): climate change, food and agriculture, supply chain resilience, human health, and cross cutting areas to advance all these areas. Moreover, the EO called for this vision to be enabled by collaboration among government, industry, the private sector, and public sector researchers.  CASA-Bio is excited to announce our six Advancement Workshops, designed to propel the bioeconomy forward. These interactive workshops will focus on specific research and development challenges and opportunities for the bioeconomy, bringing together experts from academia, industry, and government.  Each workshop will include participants selected from open applications from the R&D community and from suggestions by CASA-Bio organizations, ensuring a diverse range of perspectives and expertise. Each workshop will be fully virtual and take place over two days in July or August.”

National Institutes of Health (NIH): Notice of Intent to Publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement for Environmental Health Disparities Centers (P50)

The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities in partnership with the National Institute on Environmental Health Sciences and the National Cancer Institute intends to promote the continuation of The Environmental Health Disparities Centers program (referred to as the EHD Centers) by publishing a Notice of Funding Opportunity to solicit applications. The EHD Centers will conduct environmental health disparities and environmental justice research, engage in research capacity building, and provide training across diverse disciplines and backgrounds with a disease agnostic focus. The Centers program will be updated to align with recent executive order (EO 14096) focused on environmental justice. For this renewal the program will focus on the prevention and mitigation of adverse environmental exposures that disproportionately impact racial, ethnic, under resourced and underserved populations. Projects must focus on one or more NIH-designated health disparities populations within the US and its territories, specifically racial and ethnic minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged populations and with the intersection of persons with disabilities, sexual and gender minorities, and persons from rural and/or under resourced areas.

National Institutes of Health (NIH): Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Developing and Testing Multi-level Physical Activity Interventions to Improve Health and Well-Being

The NIH Office of Disease Prevention and participating Institutes, Centers and Offices are issuing this Notice to highlight our interest in highly innovative multi-level interventions to increase and maintain health-enhancing physical activity in a wide range of population groups, including populations that experience health disparities, children, older adults, and persons at risk for mental/behavioral health conditions, and any subpopulations that can be characterized by the intersection of two or more of these descriptors. Relevant physical activity intervention research includes translational research for pilot, exploratory, or developmental work in preparation for full-scale, fully powered efficacy studies, as well as studies seeking to adopt existing evidence-based interventions in a new context (e.g., population, setting, etc.). Research studies should be based on well-established theory, existing data, and/or evidence-based interventions. Furthermore, studies may focus on establishing efficacy, effectiveness, or dissemination and implementation of multi-level interventions.

ARPA-H: Launches Universal Patching and Remediation for Autonomous Defense (UPGRADE)

To protect hospital operations, keep devices secured, and ensure continuity of patient care, the Universal PatchinG and Remediation for Autonomous DEfense (UPGRADE) program envisions an autonomous cyber-threat solution that enables proactive, scalable, and synchronized security updates. Importantly, this software platform will enable simulated evaluations of potential vulnerabilities’ impact and adapt to any hospital environment across a wide array of common devices. The program aims to reduce the uncertainty and manual effort necessary to secure hospitals, guaranteeing that vulnerable equipment is fixed and allowing staff to focus on patient care.

Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS): Office of Minority Health (OMH): Request for Information (RFI) on Development of Public Health Vaccine and Prevention Educational Campaigns Involving Community Health Workers

DHHS OMH seeks input on involving community health workers (CHWs) to increase “cultural competency in educational campaigns on public health vaccines and prevention, including but not limited to influenza and COVID-19.”  Responses are requested by July 11, 2024.

National Endowment for the Arts Introduces National Arts Statistics and Evidence-based Reporting Center (NASERC)

NASERC has created the Arts Indicators Project to track key measures across four domains: artists and other cultural workers, arts participation, arts and cultural assets, and arts and education. Indicators within these domains summarize important developments and trends in the arts by using the latest national statistics, which are updated as new data become available. Additionally, NASERC produces topical reports, practitioner guides, field scans, and literature reviews to support the work of policy makers, practitioners, researchers, and inform the general public.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Releases Innovation, Research and Development Strategic Plan

“The DHS Secretary seeks to ensure technological improvement efforts, both across DHS and with external partners, are coordinated and integrated to achieve optimal outcomes for its operators and other stakeholders. Innovation, research and development (IRD) efforts help build the capabilities needed to address the homeland security threats and hazards of today and tomorrow.  The first-of-its-kind DHS Innovation, Research and Development Strategic Plan identifies ways to coordinate IRD investments to maximize impacts across our components and missions. The plan brings focus to our IRD portfolios by highlighting eight key, cross-cutting strategic priority research areas (SPRAs) that the Department will foster over the next seven fiscal years.”
