Domestic Health Professions Student Health Insurance Information
Lets face it - health care is expensive, and in your program, required. One significant injury or illness can affect your ability to keep up with your classes AND end up costing you a lot of money especially if you don't have health insurance. The federal Affordable Care Act has provided you with some options on getting health insurance coverage. Remember any enrolled students can use Student Health Services regardless of their health insurance coverage or health insurance carrier.
Please note the information below applies only to domestic health professions students. View information about health coverage for international students.
Understanding your options for health insurance coverage
There are several options for young adults when it comes to health insurance coverage. Consider which option will work best for you and your budget.
Getting or staying on a parents plan:
-
Are you under age 26? You may be able to get on a parents health insurance plan. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), your parents can add you to their health insurance plan and pay for the additional coverage. Your parents should check with their health insurance company or their employers benefit department.
Health Insurance plans for college students:
- Eligible students can purchase health insurance coverage through United Healthcare
Student Resources (UHCSR). The Kansas Board of Regents has contracted with UHCSR to
provide optional health insurance for all the Regents universities. As a health professions
student you qualify for a reduced premium rate.
*Due to KBOR regulations, The Student Insurance Plan is not available to Online Only students.
- It may be less expensive to purchase health insurance under this plan than what your parents have to pay to have you on their insurance.
- The UHCSR plan is currently the only health insurance plan accepted by Student Health
Services. This means we will file claims with UHCSR when you are seen in Student Health.
- Remember, you don't need insurance to be seen at Student Health Services.
- You can be seen at Student Health Services no matter what insurance you have but we cannot bill insurance companies other than UHCSR. That means you will need to pay for your visit and then submit the receipt to your insurance plan for reimbursement.
- If you opt to purchase the UHSCR insurance, here are some additional resources that
may be helpful.
- Mobile access to UHCSR
- UHCSR NurseLine and Student Assistance Program (PDF)
- Contact UHCSR at 1-800-767-0700 or .
Use the Health Insurance Marketplace to buy your own insurance plan:
- Kansas uses the federal health insurance marketplace or exchange found at . Depending on your situation, you might be able to buy your own plan through the
marketplace.
- You can apply online through the healthcare.gov website.
- If you need help applying through the marketplace or have questions because of your specific situation, there are local marketplace Navigators and Assistors that can help you.
- One catch: If someone claims you as a tax dependent (like your parents), you can buy a plan through the Marketplace but won't qualify for savings based on your income.
Enrolling in UHCSR:
While students can view the plan summary and certificate on the web site, as a health science student, you will enroll differently. Why the change? With the increased price of health care UHCSR wants to help ease the burden on students who are required by the university to carry medical insurance.
- You will receive an email from your program including a link for your specific program
- After you submit your enrollment data a notification will be sent to a university representative. That representative will verify your acceptance to the program you identified. Your information will then be submitted to UHCSR.
- You will receive a final email from UHCSR containing a premium payment link. Once you complete your payment your insurance enrollment will be complete. Your payment link will be active for 5 days. Your insurance identification cards will be available to print within 24-48 hours after payment. You can find instructions on creating your UHCSR account and printing off your insurance cards above.
- If you do not receive an email from UHCSR please contact Kimberly Vermillion at 978-6129 or kimberly.vermillion@wichita.edu
