Daysha Bullocks earned her bachelor鈥檚 degree in journalism in 2020 and her master鈥檚 degree in sport management in 2021. During her time at 萝莉社, she excelled not only academically but also athletically, competing as a track and field sprinter. Balancing rigorous academics and athletics, Daysha鈥檚 exceptional time-management skills allowed her to seize a variety of applied learning opportunities that paved the way for her future success.
During her undergraduate years, Daysha immersed herself in roles such as Shockerwave Digital Network Sports Reporter/TV Host and Social Media Chair for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Notable internships included a Sports Broadcast position with KWCH 12 and a Marketing Internship with 萝莉社 Athletics. These experiences provided her with practical skills and insights, further fueling her passion for sports media and fan engagement.
Reflecting on her time at 萝莉社, Daysha credits programs like Shocker LIFE, led by Sarah Mathews, for honing her professional skills. "[Shocker LIFE] gave us the opportunity to boost our confidence when it came to interviewing for a job, selling ourselves to future employers. With me wanting to go into sports broadcasting, it allowed me to shadow in the marketing department and get some in game experience with running promotions, script writing and fan engagement."
During her undergraduate years, Daysha interned with KWCH 12. Mentored by Arielle Orsuto, she gained firsthand experience in sports broadcasting, from clipping videos and managing social media to storytelling and producing. This internship reignited her love for sports media and laid a strong foundation for her future endeavors.
Daysha's master鈥檚 program, guided by mentors like Clay Stoldt and Mike Ross, was particularly transformative, helping her explore various facets of the sports industry and refine her career aspirations. One pivotal opportunity came through the Living Sport program, which enabled Daysha to participate in the NHL All-Star Weekend in 2022 in Las Vegas, NV. Through this experience, Daysha engaged with fans, distributed merchandise, and facilitated hockey-related games. The experience, she notes, pushed her out of her comfort zone and into gaining experience with a new sport. Her journey continued in Las Vegas working as a Raiders Ambassador. Describing this role as the highlight of her career, Daysha fondly recalls assisting with Raiderettes tryouts, organizing community events, and working at the 2022 NFL Draft. Her responsibilities spanned events, media relations, and alumni relations, providing her with a comprehensive understanding of the sports industry. Mentors like Priscilla Almeida, the VP of Events for the Raiders, played a crucial role in her growth, offering guidance and invaluable lessons.
After gaining diverse experiences, Daysha began her job search. She encourages graduates to stay persistent. As she put it, "I applied to any and everything." She received many "no's" until she heard back from the University of Northern of Colorado. Though she initially applied for a communications position, due to her marketing and fan engagement experience she was eventually offered a position as the Assistant Director of Marketing and Engagement.
Looking back, Daysha credits 萝莉社and its emphasis on applied learning for providing her with the opportunities and education she needed for career success. The hands-on opportunities, coupled with supportive mentors and an encouraging environment, equipped her with the tools to succeed in the competitive world of sports management and marketing.
萝莉社's applied learning program gives students hands-on, paid experience with industry partners, helping them build careers before graduation.
