Considered as the birth of Nataraja form of Lord Shiva, a special Abhishekam or prayer is performed at the Chidambaram Shiva Temple in Tamil Nadu and Mathira Peedika Devi Temple

Arudra Darshan, which is considered to be a main event of the festival, will be observed at 2 PM on January 6, 2023.

The festival is celebrated on the Full Moon of the Marghazi month of Tamil Calendar. On this day, the dancing form or Nataraja is taken out of the temples and a special feast is prepared by the followers.

The feast, called Neivedhyam is prepared in households for Lord Nataraja on Thiruvathirai Kali.

Thiruvadhirai kali is made of Rice, Jaggery, Moong dhall, Coconut, Cardamom and Ghee and is served with special with Thiruvathirai ezhlu curry koottu.
