Frederick Douglass High School is one of two high schools that were closed due to flooding.

Work crews have been on the job since the weekend, trying to clean up flooded classrooms and hallways on at least three floors in one wing at Douglass.

"Pipes froze, and then, when things started to warm up, some of those pipes began to break," said Lynette Washington, the district's chief operating officer.

In addition to Douglass, 11 News went to Digital Harbor High School, where wet carpeting was piled up outside due to serious water damage.

"I would say that, over the break, we had 15 to 20 schools that had some kind of impact where we had busted coils, pipes that cracked," Washington said.

At Douglass, staff members said they're preparing for a week of virtual learning, which includes ensuring students have laptop computers.

Currently, the plan is to continue virtual learning at Digital and Douglass for this week only.

Administrators are asking parents to call their child's school, to check the school's website, or to stop by campus for regular updates.
