Japanese designer Issey Miyake, dies of cancer aged 84

Issei Miyake was born in Hiroshima, Japan on April 22, 1938.

He studied graphic design at the Tama Art University in Tokyo.

After graduation, he worked for several fashion houses including Hanae Mori and Guy Laroche.

In 1970, he launched his own fashion label, Miyake Design Studio.

He is known for his avant-garde style and innovative use of fabric.

He has won numerous awards including the Japan Fashion Critics' Award and the Order of the Rising Sun.

In 1998, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
