Former world No. 1 Garbine Muguruza acknowledged that it has been a challenging season for her and admitted that she has been struggling with her confidence levels throughout the season.

Muguruza entered the 2022 season hoping to achieve big things, but so far her season has been a massive disappointment.

She has twice as many defeats this year than victories and it's something that she thinks mosty comes down to confidence

Muguruza has had a disappointing season so far, with her most notable moment being a quarterfinal finish at the Qatar Open.

She recently reached the third round of the US Open and put in a tough fight against Petra Kvitova before losing 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(10).

Muguruza, who is the third-seeded player in Tokyo, had a first round bye at the tournament. In the round-of-16, Muguruza overcame 213rd-ranked Despina Papamichail 6-4 6-2.

After winning the first set, Muguruza started the second set with back-to-back breaks and a very comfortable 4-0 lead.

Down by a set and two breaks, there was no coming back for Papamichail as Muguruza held on to her serve the rest of the match to complete a two-set win. Muguruza plays next match Liudmila Samsonova.
