Advisory Board Prospectus

 

Overview

The Applied Engineering Advisory Board represents our stakeholders and is comprised of leaders from local and regional industry, organizations, government agencies, academia, and other relevant professional engineering areas. Graduates from the program who have had five years or more relevant experience may also be invited to the Board in their capacity as alumni. We envision that this partnership will be mutually beneficial to both the Board Member and the Department.

Purpose

The purpose of the Applied Engineering Advisory Board is to provide guidance and support for our vision and educational objectives, which will impact our students and their future careers. Board members will contribute towards the direction of the program, provide vision for future careers, and advise on if students are sufficiently prepared to be successful in their chosen career pathways. This would include advising on content, teaching methods, performance assessment and accreditation, strategic direction of the department, research initiatives, national/international visibility, and budgeting and fundraising activities.

Composition

The Advisory Board shall be composed of no less than 10 active voting members. Board members will be selected from local and regional industries and organizations and should be strong advocates of the department. They should occupy positions that give them a broad vision of their industries.

Expectations 

It is anticipated that the Advisory Board members will:

  • Consider serving for a period of three years, after which time it can be renewed. An effort will be made to stagger Board Members renewal dates.
  • Meet no more than twice a year for two hours or less. There will be at least one meeting each year, typically at the end of the spring semester or early summer. Additional interim or update meetings may also be planned if deemed necessary. Meetings will typically be on campus with a virtual connection provided for those who cannot attend in person. Meetings will be scheduled with at least four weeks notice with the final agenda sent no later than one week prior to the meeting.
  • Attend the Engineering Open House Senior Design project showcase at the end of each spring semester. Board Members willing to score and/or provide feedback on these projects would be greatly appreciated.
  • Assist in applied learning opportunities for students. These could be a variety of activities such as:
    • Course guest lecturing
    • Providing student projects for courses and/or senior design
    • Providing student opportunities for externships or internships
