Project Goals
The project has five specific goals:
- To develop a scale model laboratory distribution system for research into questions that arise from networked control and monitoring of low-wind energy systems connected to the AC distribution system.
- To identify the point(s) for reliability improvement of wind turbines, feasible modification strategies, and the possibility of integration of sensor technology for condition monitoring.
- To develop a life-cycle database that is accessible to the wind energy research and development community for assessing environmental impacts and making technology decisions throughout the life cycle of a wind energy system.
- To improve the durability of turbine blades through new materials: hybrid carbon-glass composite blades and nanocomposite coatings.
- To expand the body of College of Engineering faculty working in wind energy by providing those faculty who have expertise in energy storage and manufacturing systems with opportunities to make industrial and DOE contacts and to develop a focused research plan.
