A paper describing the activities of our GK-12 project was accepted for presentation at the Annual American Society for Microbiology general meeting in Boston. The poster presentation detailed the development, implementation, and assessment of district-wide molecular biology classroom activities. A section of the poster included data generated from student research projects. more...
Students from Northeast High School had two GK-12 Research Club projects submitted the Kansas Junior Academy of Sciences advance to the state finals. While they did not win the competetion, their scores were exemplary. more...
Students and teachers at Northeast High School presented results from their GK-12 research at the 140th Annual Kansas Academy of Sciences meeting in Emporia Kansas. This group worked with GK-12 fellow Brooke Landon on developing techniques for performing DNA gel electrophoresis using household materials. more...
蹤獲扦 GK-12 fellows Melissa Bean and Kate Brane attended the gathering of GK-12 participants in Washington, DC. Dr. Schneegurt and the fellows joined hundreds of GK-12 fellows, teachers, and PIs at the Renaissance Hotel to network, discuss practical issues, and hear speakers that included the Director of NSF. more...
North High School students and teachers have successfully conducted an intensive study in developmental toxicology. GK-12 fellow Kate Brane works with Dr. Karen Brown in the area of environmental toxicology using the frog as a model organism. This project examined sublethal concentrations of a popular herbicide Isoxaben. more...
New GK-12 graduate student fellows bring new reserch projects to the "Pass Me the Salt" research clubs. Kate Brane is leading an effort to examine the ecology of the wildlife of the Arkansas River that winds through Wichita. High school students and teachers had a great time mucking around in the river to begin a new year of research. more...

All of the GK-12 teacher fellows spent two days at 蹤獲扦 learning about new molecular biology classroom activities. GK-12 fellows and Dr. Schneegurt provided background lectures and practical advice on molecular biology techniques and applications. The teachers had the opportunity to practice the activities with the equipment sets provided by NSF for their schools. The teachers will extend the training tower to biology teachers and students at the 8 comprehensive public high schools in Wichita. more...
The GK-12 fellows have worked hard for several months to develop two molecular biology activities for high school classrooms. Using equipment funded by NSF, the fellows worked out the details of a DNA fingerprinting activity that includes gel electrophoresis and resctriction enzyme digestions. A second activity was focused on molecular microbial ecology. The protocols were delivered to GK-12 teacher fellows at three target schools for development into lesson and unit plans. more...
One of the most exciting aspect of the 蹤獲扦 GK-12 program is the creation of research clubs in the three targeted Wichita public high schools. The clubs will meet after school and during lunch hours. GK-12 teacher fellows and graduate fellows will work closely with the club members on laboratory research projects. more...
