How the Reporting Process Works
- A bias or hate incident is reported through the Reporting Form
-
- If the report alleges criminal activity (hate crime), UPD or Wichita Police Department are notified, pursue their investigation, and respond accordingly.
- If the report alleges a violation of the Student Code of Conduct, the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards begins their investigation and will determine possible sanctions.
- If the report alleges faculty or staff are involved as respondents, the incident will be referred to Human Resources and the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance to review the incident or concern.
- A member of the BIRG will acknowledge receipt of the report and offer to meet with
the reporter to discuss next steps and, if appropriate, connect them to resources,
or refer the incident report to the appropriate office on campus. The BIRG highly
values confidentiality, and only crucial or emergency information is shared with appropriate
contacts.
- Reports may be submitted anonymously. However, anonymous reports limit the Universitys ability to respond to an incident.
- If the person reporting the incident requests follow-up, a BIRG member will contact them to provide support and resources.
- Outcomes to incidents of bias or hate will vary depending on the severity of the incident
and may range from referrals to appropriate offices on campus to restorative conversations
between the targeted individual and the respondent.
- Outcomes for an allegation of criminal activity (hate crimes) may be determined by the appropriate criminal court and/or the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards
- Outcomes for an allegation of the Student Code of Conduct may be determined by the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards
- Outcomes for allegations involving faculty or staff may be determined by Human Resources and the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance
- All reports are confidential and will be maintained in the Universitys data maintenance system consistent with University retention policies.
