There are thousands of routes to becoming who you were meant to be, and 蹤獲扦
University's Shocker Pathway program can help support and guide you along the journey. Below is a sampling of how some of our students found their way to a degree -- and success
-- through 蹤獲扦's Shocker Pathway program.
Why did you choose the Shocker Pathway? I chose to attend 蹤獲扦 Tech and 蹤獲扦 mainly because of my daughter. I had a lot of
options because I was part of LEDA and I got to spend a summer at Princeton and visit
Harvard. If I would have kept on that path, I probably could have attended one of
those colleges. Then I got pregnant my senior year. I remember suddenly feeling really
lost and I wanted to be at home. I knew I could take advantage of everything that
蹤獲扦 and 蹤獲扦 Tech had to offer. I wanted to be here, at home in the community that
I loved.
What is unique about your Shocker Pathway story? When you are going to college with a newborn, it is kind of terrifying. You are afraid
to make any choices because you are like, "Oh, is this best for her?" and there is
always a sacrifice. Going to college with a newborn was kind of my way of saving my
own life. My education process started at a very uncertain, scary point. I went from
the kid that had the next ten years of my life planned out, to having no idea what
was going to happen the next day even."
Is there anyone that has helped you succeed that you would like to send a "Shocker
Shout-Out"? I'd like to entire 蹤獲扦 Tech staff and my professors a shout-out because they deserve
it, but specifically Tina Sorensen at 蹤獲扦 Tech; I got really lazy with my writing
and she called me out for it and believed in me. She really just kind of slapped me
in the face a little bit and basically told me, "You have something special, use it."
Her saying that changed my life.
Why did you choose the Shocker Pathway? I was interested in 蹤獲扦 because I heard that they had a good Psychology program and
I grew up in Wichita. I talked with Jenna in the Office of Online and Adult Learning
first, and she told me about the Shocker Pathway. It just seemed like a good fit.
What is unique about your Shocker Pathway story? After high school, I didn't think I needed to go to college I just got into a job.
I worked security for a bank for eight years; it was an okay job, I liked it and it
was getting the bills paid. I always wanted to do more. I had some profound experiences
when I was 26 that persuaded me to take the leap and try college.
If you had one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be? Don't wait so long to try something new. Don't be afraid to let go and dive in.

Why did you choose the Shocker Pathway? "When I went in, the advisors were really nice and everyone was very welcoming. I
felt right at home from the beginning, so it was kind of a no-brainier for me. The
Shocker Pathway also offered a great variety and they were very flexible with courses
and schedules. I've had to work full time throughout my education so being able to
take an evening class or an online course has made life a lot easier.
What is unique about your Shocker Pathway story? I worked as a make-up artist for seven years; I worked for Chanel. It was fun, but
I wanted more; I felt like I wasn't challenging myself enough.
If you had one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be? Don't put it off! Just get in there, put in the time and effort. Work hard because
it is so rewarding at the end.

My Microbiology teacher, Timothy Eberl, and my chemistry teacher, Linda Grossman.
Don't put it off! Just get in there, put in the time and effort. Work hard because
it is so rewarding at the end.
Why did you choose the Shocker Pathway? My mom told me that it would be a good idea to finish my associates through the Shocker
Pathway, because I would be away from the distractions of my friends at a bigger university.
I decided to take that step, and I found out about the Pathway when I talked with
an academic advisor. I thought it was the best choice for me. It is precise and clear;
you know your courses will transfer.
What is unique about your Shocker Pathway story? We are immigrants, and my mom started taking courses at 蹤獲扦 when I was in middle school.
She was having trouble with the English in her courses, she just seemed to always
be alone in her journey. I was afraid that I would be alone in my college experience
too. As soon as I came here and I met with my advisors, they have always been there
for me and that blew my mind.
If you had one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be? Make school a priority, but have a life; don't just be a robot.

that is what motivates me to do my best. My teachers here, Linda Grossman my chemistry
teacher. She has taught me hard work is very valuable. Also my public speaking teacher,
Cynthia Smith, has helped me so much. My first advisor here, Courtney, was amazing
and she's going to be one of my teachers now so that will be fun.
As soon as I came here and I met with my advisors, they have always been there for
me and that blew my mind.
Why did you choose the Shocker Pathway? It helped me see that I could do this and there were clear directions about what I
needed to do. My 蹤獲扦 Tech Advisor, Shelby Smith, helped me understand the program
and know who I needed to talk to at 蹤獲扦. This program made education affordable for
me. There have been phenomenal teachers at 蹤獲扦 Tech, they don't make you fearful and
they are always helpful.
What is unique about your Shocker Pathway story? I was really lost, I didn't know what I was doing in college. I wasn't the best high
school student and I struggle with mental health issues. So I didn't really think
I could do college. This program has kept me grounded and the people around me never
gave up on me. This pushed me to get help and keep going. I have a home at school.
If you had one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be? Listen to the people around you, the world isn't always against you. The world is
here to help you if you want to take the help.
What advice would you give someone who is considering the Shocker Pathway? If you were like me and you messed up in high school, you get a second chance. If
you don't know what you want to do, the Shocker Pathway gets you through those things
that you have to do first, so by the time you are done with general education courses,
you don't have to start at zero. It gives you opportunities that you didn't see before.

college experience.
Is there anyone that has helped you succeed that you would like to send a "Shocker
Shout-Out"? Chemistry instructor at 蹤獲扦 Tech - she's the head of chemistry. Linda Grossman. Also
Dr. Justin Ryan from 蹤獲扦, my research advisor.
Why did you choose the Shocker Pathway? I moved to Wichita with my mom from the panhandle of Florida because she is in the
military. When we moved, I realized that I needed to go to school. I've been out of
school since 2017, and to get anywhere nowadays you have to have a certification or
degree. So I looked up colleges in my area, and this was one of the top ones.
What is unique about your Shocker Pathway story? I took a few years off after graduating from high school. The last few years, I've
been working in retail. My previous perception of college was that it was overrated;
I didn't want to put myself into a life of debt and not be guaranteed a job. But since
enrolling and starting classes I've changed that thought; I can do this. This can
be affordable and I don't have to go into hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt.

What is unique about your Shocker Pathway story? Five years ago I was on the downhill of a 10-year prison sentence. Back then, I thought
it was cool to be a young man, living on the streets, doing what I wanted to do when
I wanted to do it. I had a limited way of thinking then and it trapped me. But as
the years progressed, I began to open my mind. If I can do 10 years in prison, why
can't I do 10 years in college?
If you had one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be? Don't be afraid to be alone. When you are afraid to be alone, you attract the wrong
company.
Is there anyone that has helped you succeed that you would like to send a "Shocker
Shout-Out"? Ms. Lee Lynch from prison, she helped when I was in a place in my life that I didn't
know which direction to go, she opened the doors that helped me remember I am someone
and I can do something. My mentors, Steve and Jesse who supported and believed in
me especially my college goal. Countless numbers of family members who have had an
encouraging word. Countless people in prison that told me, "Hey, this is not you.
You don't have to be that dude. You don't have to be who you think people want you
to be. Be who you want to be."
Hometown: St. Louis Major: Biological Sciences / Pre-Medicine
Why did you choose the Shocker Pathway? I moved to Wichita about 5 years ago and became a fan of the Shockers. I came to 蹤獲扦

been out of school for a little bit.

years. There was just a need for something better; I wasn't going to be a truck driver
for 20+ years. Recently, my daughter got diagnosed with autism and I originally planned
to be an engineer. Her diagnosis made me want to go into medicine and to make that
a career and to understand this condition for my daughter and others like her.
If you had one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be? Slow down! You're not going to get this degree in two years or two semesters. It is
okay to challenge yourself, just make sure you are doing it in a smart way. Calm down,
trust the process and you're going to be alright.
Is there anyone that has helped you succeed that you would like to send a "Shocker
Shout-Out"? Lisa Hilt my psychology teacher. Lai-L, the Director of Student Engagement and Dr.

school for a little bit.
Why did you choose the Shocker Pathway? I started in the Digital Marketing program at 蹤獲扦 Tech. A friend told me about the
Shocker Pathway and I learned more about the program at orientation. I just thought
it was the best option to help me reach my goal of earning my Bachelor's in Social
Work. I want to continue working with the homeless community. I've worked in that
field for 15 years, so I wanted to get the degree to help me further that career.
What is unique about your Shocker Pathway story? After high school, I went straight into college and was wanting to complete my art
degree at 蹤獲扦 and it wasn't what I needed. I took some time off, working retail. Going
back to college is probably the best thing I can do because it will let me continue

Lindsey Turner Augusta, KS Psychology
Why did you choose to attend 蹤獲扦? I chose 蹤獲扦 because it is well known and I wasn't concerned with being, for lack of
a better word, screwed over. I had some previous issues regarding Devry so I guess
I was a little hand shy.
What is unique about your Shocker Story? I am not sure if there is really anything unique. I actually looked in to going to
蹤獲扦 for psychology when I was 21. This was when I first new that I wanted to help
children and adolescents who were abused in some way or troubled in some way. However,
at the time, I was in an abusive relationship, and was made to believe I couldn't
do it. So then once out of that relationship I tried Devry back in 2004, right after
I met my husband. I chose a different path because I still believed I couldn't do
it. Stopped going there after some issues with them, then I had children. In 2015,
I decided I was going to do it. Just go for it and if I started and realized I couldn't
in fact do it, then I would try something else. However, this was where my heart was,
so I finally got back to school in 2016 at BCCC, where I received an associates degree
in liberal arts. I chose to start small and get my core classes out of the way there
and then to move onto 蹤獲扦. I am now about 1 year away from receiving my bachelors
degree in psychology, after which I plan to apply for the graduate program in counseling.
If you had one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be? I would tell myself, not to allow someone to crush your dreams. Prove them wrong.

had help from my professors when needed.
Is there anyone who has helped you succeed that you would like to send a "Shocker
Shout-Out"? The majority of my support came from 蹤獲扦! So many people have helped and rooted for
me. My husband, children, and my parents have been my rock through it all. Every time
I have come in to enroll, every single person has helped me through the process, and
helped me choose great classes!
Erick Cruz St. John, KS Criminal Justice, Minor in Spanish
Why did you choose to attend 蹤獲扦? It seemed like the best place to go to school for me.
What is unique about your Shocker Story? I never thought I would go to college. Just being here doesn't even seem real sometimes.
It's real and it still hasn't 100% sunk in yet. I don't believe it.

What advice would you give someone who is considering 蹤獲扦? Just do it! It's a great school!
Is there anyone who has helped you succeed that you would like to send a "Shocker
Shout-Out"? Besides God, I would say my pastor, Victor Gordon. He's more intelligent I could hope
to be, he has given me good advice. He used to be a professor, so I found he has good
insight. He's helped make the journey a lot easier.
Why did you choose to attend 蹤獲扦? Because it was here. I had to stay in town so I came back to get my bachelor's degree.
What is unique about your Shocker Story? I graduated Cowley in 2005, worked in the graphic design industry, working in small
spots. I got burned out personally and professionally. Wanted to switch and go into
Engineering. I was here this semester working on a portfolio and I landed a job at
an ad agency only after 1 semester. I worked my tail off to work to develop a portfolio.
Competed in student portfolio show. I competed and won best logo and everything went
from there.
If you had one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be? You're never as good as you think you are. And stop asking your Mom if your design
looks good.

they are colleagues.

yet, when I felt ready, I finally came.
What is unique about your Shocker Story? I started going to cosmetology school, I started working in a salon I really liked
working with people. I wanted to help them on the inside, not the superficial beauty.
I decided to pursue psychology finally. Don't give up. Give it a try. My grandparents.
They've raised me from the age of 14 on up. They make sure I have everything I need.
They are amazing people. I've been through a lot of hardships. I want to thank everyone
on the CARE team and all my professors who have helped get me through it. Su Mi Leonard Although I was not born there, Aiea, Hawaii will always be my home!
Field Studies Geology It was the people. The first people that I met when I first
started looking at schools were Chad and Stacy from the Marcus Welcome Center. Stacy
had soon become a huge support for me and introduced me to so many wonderful people
at the university, especially at the Adult Learning Center. To be honest had I not
have felt the overwhelming love and support from the people at the University I do
not think I would have chosen 蹤獲扦. I didn't even think I would fit in when
looking at schools. But this amazing school had some of the best people I've ever
met in my life, and 蹤獲扦has become my second home and I beam
with pride being a Shocker. I do not feel as though my story is unique, but I know
my past is what gives me the strength to push through any difficult times. As I got
comfortable with the supportive people around me I was comfortable enough to open
up to them about being trafficked by my own mother. Not for money, but for control
of the people in her life. It went on until I was 34 years when I was finally able
to break away completely. I moved to Wichita, because someone I knew from my past
told me that they would help me, but in the end it was another situation where I found
myself before, being used. So my daughter and I soon found ourselves living out of
my vehicle, then into a homeless shelter. Because of everything I went through in
the past, being abused physically, mentally, and sexually my whole life my health
had declined, but God was my support and I knew that he had a plan for me. i didn't
know what it was at the time. While at the shelter I was introduced to the Combating
Human Tracking group on campus, and then the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center downtown.
Going through therapy with them I knew I wanted a better life for my daughter. In
order to do that I had to finish my degree. Then last summer I made that leap and
walked into the Marcus Welcome Center. I broke down and cried. I was so hungry, so
thirsty, so tired, I didn't know what else to do or where to go, but for the first
time I could ever remember I was treated like a human being and someone worth kindness.
They gave me a list of things I had to do, and I made the choice to pay for my admissions
fee instead of groceries. I took a chance, and it was the best decision of my life.
While living at the shelter, scrounging for food, trying to keep my daughter safe
I was going to school. When I would get on campus I felt normal. I felt successful.
I felt free. It was such an amazing feeling. I would then go to the downtown YMCA
and do my homework since they had a Wi-Fi, and my daughter, Abbie got to play with
other kids and swim. She and I both knew how blessed we were by Heavenly Father for
this opportunity. I still have some major health issues, especially this semester,
but I have come so far. Even when I feel like giving up completely because the pain
gets so bad, the people on campus especially at Adult Learning Center, Trio disability,
and Disability services inspire me to keep going. To push through. My love for the
university and everything everyone has done for me and my daughter shines through
our home and into my daughter's heart. She is only 12 but she told me that she wants
to attend 蹤獲扦as well. She is seen at her school throwing the
WuShock to other teachers she know that are shocker alumni. LIke I said, 蹤獲扦
University is our second home. We wouldn't be here, and have met so many amazing people
were it not for the university. And for that we are eternally thankful.
If you had one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be? Never give up. There are going be times when you feel like nothing is going right.
No one will ever listen to your cries. It will seem that life becomes unbearable,
BUT NEVER GIVE UP. Keep fighting. Because you are important. You are treasured. You
are someone great, and GREAT people will see that in you. Those that truly love you
will support you and help you through. You can overcome anything you set your heart
and mind to. "For I know the thoughts I have for you says the Lord. Thoughts of peace
and not of evil things. To give you a future and a hope" Jeremiah 29:11.
What advice would you give someone who is considering 蹤獲扦? Always communicate with your professors. Even if It is to say hello to them before
class. If there is anything you do not know, or you feel overwhelmed, anything keep
a line of communication open with them. One of the amazing things about the University
is how caring and understanding the professors, advisors, and counselors are here.
They want you to succeed, and if you never speak up they do not know what to do to
help you. So keep a line of communication open with them. Some of the best things
I've learned from them were outside of the classroom.
Is there anyone who has helped you succeed that you would like to send a "Shocker
Shout-Out"? There are so many people that I can think of. Dr. Susan Norton for literally everything.
I've been in her office crying, laughing, angry, hungry, lost, tired, you name it
she's seen it all. She always gave me that extra energy to push through. Pam from
Adult learning services.. Oh man this semester I know I was driving her mad with the
printer. But I couldn't have done it without her. Mercedes Lubbers and the others
from Trio disability. She was in the boxing ring so to speak on tackling whatever
came up. Grady and the lovely people at Disability services. It felt amazing to have
people behind me and motivating me. I definitely cannot forget Dylan and Dalton from
adult learning. Those two guys made me feel like a human being. When no one in my
classes would talk to me they would always say hi and talk to me when they see me
around campus or in the office. So many times when I felt so depressed and those two
would cheer me. Not to mention all the coffee they made sure was always on hand for
me to survive my early morning classes. These people are so dear to me. They became
the family I had always longed for. Along with my daughter they give me the strength
to push through. I cannot thank them all enough.
Why did you choose to attend 蹤獲扦? The financial opportunities, the diversity within the campus and the classes were
small.
What is unique about your Shocker Story? The business field was just not for me. I wanted to help others, and I don't feel
like I could have done that with a business degree. I will be a first generation student
and the first graduate from both sides of my family. I was determined to show the
importance of a higher education to my younger sibling.
If you had one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be? Be a little selfish and put yourself first.

sense. I always wanted to be different than my brother, but here I am back.
What is unique about your Shocker Story? I was in the military, to pursue a military career. I did that for 7 years at the
Air National Guard. I wanted to pursue more civilian opportunities. I had to choose
a different career field, so I wasn't able to seek the professional career I wanted
in the military, so I decided to do it as a civilian.
