MOMS (Multiple Opportunities for Multiple Sensors)

Apprentice Mission (Beginner and Beginner II Teams)

Description:

The MOMS course can be completed in many ways using multiple sensors (light, color, touch, ultrasonic), or even by counting rotations. You choose the way to follow the path, climb the bridge, and find the yellow squares, without touching walls!

Maximum time limit for an official run is 3 minutes. The run will end at 3 minutes and teams will receive the score earned up to that time.

Build Instructions

  1. Cut the plywood paneling to 48.00 length.
  2. From the remaining plywood, cut two 8.00 wide pieces for the ramps. One approximately 6.50 long and one approximately 8.50 long. Both of these will trimmed down later to a closer fit.
  3. From the remaining plywood, cut the platform surface 12.00 by 16.00. Trim as required for the 8.00 pathway.
  4. Cut the 1 1/8 lattice strips to length as needed for support under Velcro for staple length:
    • 6.00 = 3 pcs
    • 8.00 = 3 pcs
  5. Cut the 1 x 6 pine into lengths for walls (two different heights) as noted in the drawing:
    • 5.50 = 3 pcs
    • 7.50 = 3 pcs
  6. Cut the 1 x 2 furr strips into lengths as noted in the drawing:
    • 46.50 = 4 pcs
    • 45.00 = 1 pcs
    • 18.25 = 1 pcs
    • 25.25 = 1 pcs
    • 17.25 = 2 pcs (ramp)
    • 24.00 = 1 pcs (ramp)
    • 16.00 = 1 pcs (ramp)
    • 6.50 = 3 pcs (ramp)
  7. Cut the 1 x 2 furr strips into triangles with 3 legs for support of the walls (18 pcs).
  8. Trim the furr strips for the ramps in matched pairs.
  9. Attach the furr strips to the platform surface using wood glue and nails.
  10. Trim the plywood ramp pieces for the best fit and smooth transition. Attach to the furr strips using wood glue and nails.
  11. Attach the 6.50 furr strips to the underside of the ramps and platform using nails.
  12. Attach the furr strips to the bottom of the course as shown in the drawing using wood glue and nails.
  13. Attach the lattice strips to the underside of the base using wood glue in the approximate locations shown where the Velcro is to be placed. Clamp or weight the pieces as would be appropriate to maintain proper alignment and minimal gap. Allow sufficient dry time before further working.
  14. Attach the triangles to the bottom of the walls (2 ea).
  15. Paint the base with green paint. Apply two coats with sufficient drying time between applications.
  16. Paint the base along the centerline of the path with black paint. Apply two coats with sufficient drying time between applications.
  17. Paint the walls with black paint. Apply two coats with sufficient drying time between applications.
  18. Mask the base to leave exposed the finish area, the zones in front of the walls, and the pathway.
  19. Mask the centerline of the pathway.
  20. Paint the exposed areas with yellow paint. Apply two coats with sufficient drying time between applications.
  21. Cut Velcro into pieces for the bottom of the walls.
    • 5.50 = 6 pcs
  22. Cut Velcro into pieces for the surface of the course:
    • 2.00 = 12 pcs
  23. Staple Velcro to bottom of walls. Plastic hooks against the board (hooks up in the final configuration). Use 4 staples for each piece of Velcro.
  24. Staple Velcro to surface of the course in locations approximately as shown. Soft material loops against the board (hooks up in the final configuration). Use 3 staples for each 2.00 piece of Velcro.
